Who We Are

Who We Are

Born and raised in Parakou, a town nestled in the northern reaches of Benin, my love for travel bloomed within me from a tender age. With my parents, both devoted educators, at the helm, my siblings and I embarked on an annual pilgrimage to explore the enchanting landscapes of West Africa. Initially a boisterous group of six, our numbers gradually dwindled to five, then four, and finally, three as my brothers and sister grew up and ventured into the world.

When my turn came to spread my wings and leave the familial nest, I gathered my belongings and joined my sister in Cotonou. Together, we dutifully upheld the time-honored tradition of embarking on transformative journeys. And when she found her lifelong partner and began a new chapter, I embarked on adventures of my own, sometimes venturing forth solo or accompanied by cherished friends.

Memories are etched into my being like the indelible imprint of a cherished dream. I vividly recall a meaningful family trip to the hallowed grounds of Ouidah, where we stood before the solemn Door of no Return. I was but a wide-eyed fourteen-year-old, beseeching my parents to elucidate the profound heaviness that permeated the air, forever altering my perception of history.

Another treasured recollection brings me back to a weekend vacation in the sun-kissed haven of Grand-Popo, nestled along the coast. As the ocean breeze caressed our faces, we basked in the radiant embrace of the beach, savoring the nectar of freshly plucked coconuts and relishing the morning's catch of succulent fish. As twilight painted the sky with hues of molten gold, we surrendered ourselves to the symphony of crashing waves, drifting into slumber with hearts ablaze.

Every voyage through my beloved country beckoned a tapestry of emotions, each thread weaving a unique story. Compassion coursed through my veins, mingling with an abiding sense of joy and jubilation as I delved deeper into my cultural heritage, savoring the culinary delights and embracing the customs of those beyond the confines of my tribe.

Upon relocating to the United States in my twenties, I was struck by the absence of knowledge about Africa among its residents. Then, I resolved to become a bridge, a steadfast conduit for those yearning to venture to the motherland at least once in their lifetimes.

Having traversed its soil since childhood, I understand its intricacies—the twists and turns of its landscapes and the pulsating heartbeat of its traditions and customs. As America embraces me as its new home, I stand ready and able to extend a guiding hand to anyone eager to traverse that part of the world, immerse themselves in its vibrant tapestry, and experience the profound essence of life within its embrace.
